Sienna’s whisper seemed to freeze the entire hallway.
“Eleanor already knew about us.”
Clara stared at her.
For one terrifying second, she forgot about Julian convulsing on the bedroom floor.
“What did you say?”
Sienna’s eyes filled with tears.
“She knew.”
Behind them, Eleanor remained unconscious near the doorway.
Clara’s mind raced.
If Eleanor knew, why had she spent months insulting Clara for supposedly being a worthless wife?
Why had she defended Julian every time Clara questioned his strange behavior?
And why had she always treated Sienna like the perfect daughter-in-law?
The distant sound of sirens grew louder.
“Don’t say anything else,” Clara whispered.
Sienna looked at her.
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” Clara replied. “I don’t.”
The paramedics rushed through the front door moments later.
Three emergency vehicles stopped outside the estate.
The house filled with flashing lights, medical equipment, and urgent voices.
Two paramedics rushed toward Julian.
Another team attended to Eleanor.
A police officer followed them inside.
“What happened?”
Clara opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Sienna spoke.
“He suddenly collapsed.”
The officer looked at Clara.
“Is that what happened?”
Clara nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
But her hands were shaking.
Not because of Julian.
Because she knew what she had done.
And now there were police officers inside her house.
Julian was rushed to the hospital.
Eleanor went with him.
Sienna stayed behind long enough to speak with investigators.
Clara watched the ambulance disappear through the gates.
For the first time, she realized something terrifying.
She had wanted revenge.
But she hadn’t expected consequences to arrive so quickly.
She went into the bathroom and locked the door.
Her reflection looked almost unrecognizable.
Her face was pale.
Her hair was disheveled.
She stared at herself in the mirror.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
You need to stop asking questions about the account.
Clara’s heart stopped.
What account?
Another message arrived.
Julian doesn’t know everything. Eleanor does.
Clara stared at the screen.
Then a third message appeared.
Ask her about the $680,000.
She immediately deleted the messages.
But not before taking screenshots.
Someone was watching.
And suddenly Julian’s affair didn’t seem like the biggest secret in the house.
At 4:30 in the morning, Clara arrived at the hospital.
Julian was unconscious in intensive care.
Doctors told the family that his condition was serious but stable.
They were still trying to determine exactly what had caused the medical crisis.
Clara stood outside his room.
Through the glass, she saw the man she had loved for six years connected to machines.
She should have felt satisfied.
Instead, she felt sick.
Eleanor was sitting nearby.
Her face was pale.
When she saw Clara, she immediately stood.
“Where is Sienna?”
“She went home.”
Eleanor’s expression tightened.
“Good.”
Clara sat beside her.
“Eleanor.”
“What?”
“Who is Sienna?”
Eleanor stared at her.
“You know who she is.”
“No.”
Clara leaned closer.
“I mean who is she really?”
Eleanor looked away.
Then Clara said the words that made her turn back.
“I received a message tonight.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
“What message?”
“Someone told me to ask you about six hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”
Silence.
Eleanor slowly sat down.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Who contacted you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you tell anyone?”
“No.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Then listen carefully.”
Clara waited.
“Julian has been stealing from the family company.”
Clara felt a chill.
“What?”
“Not stealing exactly.”
“Then what?”
“Moving money.”
“How much?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“More than six hundred thousand.”
Clara stared at her.
“Where?”
“Into an account controlled by Sienna.”
Everything suddenly made sense.
The designer clothes.
The jewelry.
The expensive vacations.
The mysterious money.
But there was still one question.
“Why would you allow that?”
Eleanor looked directly at her.
“Because I thought I could control it.”
Clara laughed bitterly.
“You knew your son was having an affair with his brother’s wife, and you let him move family money to her?”
“I didn’t know the entire story.”
“You knew enough.”
Eleanor’s voice broke.
“I was trying to protect the family.”
“No.”
Clara stood.
“You were protecting the family name.”
Eleanor didn’t deny it.
At 6:15 a.m., Ethan finally arrived.
He had driven straight from the construction site after receiving a call from the hospital.
He looked exhausted.
Then he saw Clara.
“Where’s Julian?”
“ICU.”
Ethan’s face went white.
“What happened?”
Clara looked at him.
“You should ask your wife.”
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Before Clara could answer, Sienna appeared at the end of the corridor.
Ethan immediately walked toward her.
“What happened?”
Sienna began crying.
“Ethan, I swear I don’t know.”
He looked at Clara.
Then at his wife.
Then toward the ICU.
Something wasn’t adding up.
Clara finally said:
“Your wife was in the bedroom with Julian.”
Ethan froze.
The hallway became silent.
“What?”
Sienna shook her head.
“It isn’t what you think.”
Ethan stared at her.
“I saw the room.”
His voice was barely audible.
“You were with my brother.”
Sienna began sobbing.
“It was complicated.”
“No.”
Ethan stepped backward.
“It wasn’t complicated.”
He looked at Clara.
“Did you know?”
She didn’t answer.
Ethan’s eyes filled with anger.
“How long?”
Clara looked at him.
“I suspected for months.”
He closed his eyes.
His entire world had collapsed in less than an hour.
Then a doctor emerged from the ICU.
“Family of Julian Vance?”
Eleanor stood.
“Yes.”
The doctor looked at them.
“His condition has stabilized.”
Everyone exhaled.
“But there’s another issue.”
“What?” Eleanor asked.
“We found evidence suggesting his collapse may not have been accidental.”
Clara’s blood ran cold.
The doctor continued.
“We’ve contacted law enforcement and requested additional testing.”
Ethan looked around.
“What does that mean?”
The doctor didn’t answer directly.
“It means someone may have intentionally exposed him to something dangerous.”
Clara felt the floor shift beneath her.
Police officers were already approaching from the end of the hallway.
One of them looked directly at her.
“Mrs. Vance?”
“Yes?”
“We need to ask you some questions.”
Eleanor immediately stepped forward.
“She’s my daughter-in-law.”
The officer looked at her.
“We’ll speak with everyone.”
Clara’s heart hammered.
Then Sienna suddenly said something that changed everything.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
Sienna was crying.
“I know who did it.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Who?”
Sienna looked directly at Eleanor.
Then at Clara.
Then back toward Julian’s ICU room.
“I know who wanted Julian dead.”
Eleanor’s face went completely white.
And for the first time that night, Clara realized the truth was far darker than an affair.
Because the six-figure secret wasn’t simply about stolen money.
It was about a secret someone had been willing to kill to protect.
