THE FIVE-DAY INHERITANCE

Caleb stared at him in disbelief.

“I don’t want your money, Mr. Vance.”

Arthur slowly shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“I don’t need someone else’s fortune.”

“You need to save your sister.”

Caleb’s expression changed.

Arthur lowered his voice.

“And I need someone I can trust.”

Caleb looked toward the hospital door.

“What exactly do you want me to do?”

“Tomorrow morning, call my attorney, Richard Hale. Tell him I want a new will prepared immediately.”

“Why me?”

“Because Vanessa believes everyone around me belongs to her.”

Arthur looked toward the door.

“She won’t suspect you.”

Caleb swallowed hard.

“And what happens after you die?”

Arthur’s eyes hardened.

“I don’t intend to die in five days.”

For the first time, Caleb noticed something strange.

Arthur didn’t look like a dying man anymore.

He looked like a man preparing for war.

The following morning, Vanessa arrived at the hospital carrying a bouquet of white roses.

She wore a black designer dress and an expression of carefully rehearsed sadness.

“Oh, Arthur…”

She placed the flowers beside his bed.

“I barely slept last night.”

Arthur looked at her weakly.

“I’m sorry.”

Vanessa smiled.

“You don’t have to apologize.”

She leaned down and kissed his forehead.

“I’m your wife.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

Behind his eyelids, he remembered her confession.

The digoxin worked beautifully.

Every word had been burned into his memory.

But Vanessa didn’t know one thing.

Arthur had secretly activated the voice recorder on his phone before she entered the room.

And every word she whispered had been captured.

Including the name Julian.

At 9:17 a.m., Richard Hale entered the hospital room.

Arthur’s attorney had represented him for nearly twenty years.

Vanessa immediately stood.

“Richard, I think Arthur needs rest.”

Richard glanced at Arthur.

Arthur gave him a barely noticeable nod.

“I need to speak with my client privately.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“I’m his wife.”

“And I’m his attorney.”

A tense silence filled the room.

Finally, Vanessa walked outside.

The moment the door closed, Arthur sat up slightly.

“Richard.”

His voice was stronger.

Richard froze.

“You look…”

“Not nearly as sick as I did yesterday?”

Richard stared at him.

Arthur handed him the phone.

“Listen.”

Richard pressed play.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

The digoxin worked beautifully.

Richard’s face went pale.

The recording continued.

When you’re gone, your $82 million fortune will finally belong to me and the man I really love.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

“Arthur…”

“I know.”

“You need the police.”

“Not yet.”

“She’s confessed to poisoning you.”

“She’s confessed to me.”

Richard understood immediately.

“You want evidence.”

Arthur nodded.

“I want enough evidence that she and Julian can’t walk away.”

Richard sat down.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Prepare the new will.”

Richard opened his briefcase.

“And who receives your estate?”

Arthur looked toward the hallway.

“The man Vanessa will never suspect.”

At noon, Vanessa received a phone call.

She stepped into an empty corridor.

“Is it done?”

A man’s voice answered.

“Almost.”

Julian.

“The doctor said five days.”

“Then we have five days.”

Vanessa glanced around.

“What about the will?”

“Did you check?”

“Arthur hasn’t changed it.”

Julian laughed quietly.

“Then we’re about to become very rich.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Malibu.”

“Malibu.”

Neither of them noticed Caleb standing around the corner.

His phone was recording.

That afternoon, Richard returned to Arthur’s room with the documents.

Arthur signed them.

One page.

Then another.

Finally, Richard closed the folder.

“It’s done.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Good.”

Richard hesitated.

“You understand what this means?”

Arthur nodded.

“If I die, Vanessa gets almost nothing.”

“And Caleb receives your entire estate.”

Arthur looked toward the window.

“Not exactly.”

Richard frowned.

Arthur leaned closer.

“The will is only the first piece.”

“What is the second?”

“Life insurance.”

Richard’s eyes widened.

“And the third?”

Arthur smiled faintly.

“The poison.”

That evening, Arthur’s condition suddenly worsened.

Doctors rushed into the room.

His heart rate dropped dangerously.

Vanessa stood outside the glass doors, watching.

A nurse shouted.

“Prepare the crash cart!”

Vanessa covered her mouth with both hands.

But beneath the tears on her face was a tiny smile.

Julian received a message.

IT’S HAPPENING.

He immediately replied.

THEN WE WAIT.

Inside the room, Arthur’s heart monitor continued to beep.

Slowly.

Weakly.

Then—

Silence.

A flat line appeared across the screen.

The medical team began CPR.

Vanessa watched from the hallway.

She whispered to herself:

“Finally.”

But she didn’t know that Arthur’s heart had not actually stopped.

The hospital’s chief cardiologist had been secretly warned.

The flatline was staged.

Arthur’s body was being moved into a concealed monitoring procedure designed to capture what happened next.

And at that exact moment, Caleb walked into Vanessa’s path.

He looked terrified.

“Mrs. Vance…”

Vanessa turned.

“What?”

“I think Mr. Vance is gone.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Then smiled.

Just for one second.

But Caleb saw it.

And his phone captured everything.

Three hours later, Vanessa entered Arthur’s private study at the Naperville estate.

She believed the house was already hers.

She opened the safe.

Inside were property deeds, investment records, passports, jewelry—and Arthur’s old will.

She laughed.

“Poor Arthur.”

Then she opened the document.

Her smile vanished.

The old will had been replaced.

She read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Her hands began to shake.

At the bottom of the page was Arthur’s signature.

And beneath it:

Beneficiary: Caleb Miller.

Vanessa’s face turned white.

“No…”

She immediately called Julian.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Arthur changed his will.”

“How much?”

“All of it.”

Silence.

Then Julian asked:

“Where is Caleb?”

Vanessa looked toward the dark hallway.

“I’ll find him.”

Julian’s voice became cold.

“Then make sure he never reaches a courtroom.”

Behind Vanessa, a tiny red light suddenly appeared.

A hidden camera had just begun recording.

And somewhere else in Chicago, Arthur Vance opened his eyes.

He was alive.

And now he knew exactly how far his wife and her lover were willing to go.
